Signs a well pump is failing

The symptoms that point at the pump, the ones that point at the pressure tank instead, and why telling them apart before you call saves money.

Most well system faults present as a pressure problem, and pressure problems have at least three quite different causes. Working out which one you have before the visit narrows the job and shortens it.

Symptoms that point at the pump

  • No water at all, with the breaker holding and the pressure gauge reading zero.
  • Water that comes and goes, particularly under heavy use.
  • Sediment or sand appearing in the water, which can mean the pump has dropped or is drawing from lower in the well.
  • Air spitting from taps, which can indicate the pump is drawing air.
  • A pump audibly running continuously and never satisfying the pressure switch.
  • A sharp jump in the electricity bill with no other explanation.

Symptoms that point at the pressure tank instead

This distinction matters more than any other on this page, because it is the difference between a job under the borehole and a job in the utility room.

  • Short cycling: the pump switching on and off rapidly every time a tap is opened. This is the classic waterlogged-tank symptom, where the bladder has failed and there is no air cushion left.
  • Pressure that spikes and drops rather than holding steady.
  • A tank that feels full and heavy all over when tapped, rather than hollow in its upper half.
  • Water hammer noises when a tap closes.

Why the distinction is worth money

A tank bladder is published at $50 to $100 and a pressure switch at $25 to $100. Pulling a submersible pump is a different order of job entirely.

Short cycling in particular is worth naming when you call. It is a well-known signature, and a contractor who hears it will bring the right parts to the first visit rather than the second.

Checks worth making before you call

These are observations, not repairs. Well systems combine mains electricity with pressurised water, and the diagnosis is worth doing yourself while the work is not.

  • Read the pressure gauge and note the number, and whether it moves when a tap is opened.
  • Check the breaker, and note whether it has tripped more than once. Repeated tripping is diagnostic.
  • Listen for whether the pump is running at all, and whether it stops or runs on.
  • Note whether the problem affects the whole property or one fixture. One fixture is almost never the pump.
  • Note how old the system is. Age changes the repair-or-replace conversation more than any single symptom.
