Well pump replacement cost calculator

Pick your pump type below for a published-range replacement estimate. If you already know which part failed, add it too: the list only offers parts that pump type can actually have, and it shows what repairing that one part costs against replacing the whole pump, using the same published figures behind our repair or replace guide.

Estimate your cost

Include pressure tank and switch? Published figures for these two differ depending on whether it's a standalone repair or part of a bigger job; the range above already covers both, see the note under your results.

How this calculator is built

Each pump type uses HomeGuide's published installed-cost range for that type. Picking a pump type also decides which repair parts appear in the second list below it: a hand pump or windmill system has no motor or powered pressure system, so it offers only the wellhead cap and seal, while the five powered pump types offer the parts that apply to a motor-driven system, with the jet ejector and foot valve limited to jet pumps and the pump sleeve limited to a submersible.

Tank and switch pricing is handled separately from the rest, because those are the two components where HomeGuide's own repair table and replacement table disagree with each other, not because either figure is wrong. Nothing here is a formula per foot or a regional adjustment; it is the published range for the option you pick, shown as-is so you can see exactly where each number comes from.

For the full published tables and the two guides this calculator draws from, see well pump replacement cost and well pump repair or replace.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this estimate?

It is a budgeting range built from published national figures for each pump type, not a quote for your property. Your actual price depends on well depth, access, existing wiring, and local market rates. Get itemized quotes from at least two licensed local contractors before you commit to a price.

What does this estimate leave out?

This covers the pump itself, and optionally the pressure tank and switch if you include them. It does not include electrical work beyond the pump circuit, well casing or wiring repair, water testing, or site access costs such as a hoist on a difficult lot. Ask your contractor to itemize anything beyond the pump swap.

I don't know what type of pump I have. What do I pick?

HomeGuide lists jet pumps as best for wells under 100 feet deep, split into a shallow-well jet for wells up to about 25 feet and a deep-well jet for the 50 to 100 foot band, with a submersible pump used for deeper wells. A local well contractor can identify your pump type from the wellhead in a few minutes, and confirming it still matters even once you have a price in mind: a deep-well jet pump ($500 to $1,400) and a submersible pump ($1,000 to $2,500) overlap across $1,000 to $1,400, so the price range alone will not tell you which one you have.

Why does the estimator only show some repair parts for my pump type?

Because not every part exists on every pump. A hand pump has no motor, so it has no control box, no motor start capacitor and no well injector to compare. Picking a pump type first narrows the second list to parts that pump can actually have, so the comparison you get is one you can act on rather than a percentage for a part your system does not include.

Why does the estimator ask what actually failed?

Because replacement is not always the right comparison. Several individual repairs are priced close enough to a full pump swap that repair stops being the obvious answer. As a rule of thumb, the closer a single repair's cost sits to a full replacement, the less repairing actually saves you, and once a repair costs as much as replacing the pump outright there is no saving left to chase. If you tell the estimator which part failed, it shows the published repair cost for that part next to the replacement estimate and says plainly when the repair side crosses that line.
