The two depths the sources actually name for switching pump types, about 25 to 27 feet and 320 feet, and the published ranges that overlap between them.

A well needing a pump usually chooses between three types: a one-line jet pump, a two-line jet pump, or a submersible pump, and depth is the main factor. The three source pages below, each covering one pump type from the same technical reference, name two real depth splits in their own words: about 25 to 27 feet, where the sources define a well as moving from "shallow" to "deep", and 320 feet, where a deep-well one-line jet pump's own published capacity ends.

Between those two points, more than one pump type's published range reaches the same depths, and the sources don't reduce that stretch to a single number. This guide shows every published figure as stated, rather than picking the one that makes the cleanest table.

One-line jet pump: a shallow class and a deep class

The source describes two different types of one-line jet pump, not one. The shallow-well class reaches from ground level down to about 25 feet, at delivery rates from 4 up to 25 gallons per minute. Separately, the same source defines a "shallow well" as one that is typically 27 feet deep or less, so it uses two slightly different numbers, 25 feet and 27 feet, for the same shallow/deep boundary. Both are the source's own words; we show both rather than picking one.

The source's deep-well class of one-line jet pump is a second, separate pump: the same page's own section heading states it lifts "as much as 320 feet", and its table of contents describes it as lifting "from over 300 feet". At that same point, the source gives its own switch instruction: past 320 feet, "you'd change to a submersible well pump".

Two-line jet pump: three published figures, not one

The two-line jet pump is where the published ranges stop being one number. The source's components section gives a common lift height of 30 to 80 feet. Its own capacity section, discussing the same pump type, gives a well depth most often served of 25 to 90 feet, and separately states that lift height capacity can run to more than 200 feet. These measure different things, lift height against well depth, and the source states both without reconciling them into one figure. The same capacity section also states directly that a two-line jet pump's lift capacity is "not limited to" the 27-foot shallow-well depth.

Is there one exact depth where you switch pump types?

Not one: the sources name two. About 25 to 27 feet is where they define a well as moving from "shallow" to "deep": the one-line jet pump's source calls a well "typically 27 ft. deep or less" a shallow well, and the two-line jet pump's source separately refers to "the shallow-well depth of 27'". The second is 320 feet: the one-line jet pump's own deep-well class tops out there, and the source states directly that beyond it, "you'd change to a submersible well pump".

Between those two points, the deep-well one-line jet pump (up to 320 feet), the two-line jet pump (three figures: 30 to 80 feet common lift height, 25 to 90 feet well depth, more than 200 feet lift capacity), and the submersible pump (30 feet upward, no stated ceiling) all have published ranges that reach the same depths. The sources don't reduce that stretch to one line, beyond naming what installers most often move to at the deeper end of the two-line jet pump's own range.

Which pump fits your situation

A well under about 25 to 27 feet is squarely one-line shallow-well jet pump territory, the shallow class of that pump type. Past that boundary, the deep-well one-line jet pump, the two-line jet pump, and the submersible pump all have published ranges that reach into the same depths, and the sources don't draw one line among them until 320 feet, where the deep-well one-line jet pump's own published capacity ends and the source itself says that's the point you'd change to a submersible.
